Thong Nai Pan Noi
Deluxe – 11,490 THB (inc Breakfast)
Deluxe Pool View – 12,235 THB (inc Breakfast)
Ocean View Deluxe -17,200 (inc Breakfast)
Buri Rasa is a new and stylish resort located on the edge of Thong Nai Pan’s glorious white sand beach. It’s pretty damn good and better value for money than the other three 5 star resorts on Thong Nai Pan Noi: Rasananda, Santhiya and Panviman. The rooms range in size from 35 sqm to 45 sqm which is perfectly adequate for a couple. Buri Rasa has all the facilities you would expect from a 5 star resort such as swimming pool and room service. The very good beach restaurant is comparatively cheap. Try the Salmon and pickled seaweed starter – it’s yummy.
2nd Place: Kupu Kupu Koh Phangan Resort
Nai Wok (5 minutes west of the main port town, Thong Sala)
Sea View Room – 9,895 THB (inc Breakfast)
Sunset Pool Villa – 13,050 THB (inc Breakfast)
Sea View Villa – 16,525 THB (inc Breakfast)
Kupu Kupu is a brand new resort on the beach front on the West coast of Koh Phangan. The beach is no good for swimming, but they have a big pool. The rooms are large at 50 sqm and 60 sqm (35 sqm is the average size of a luxury hotel room in Bangkok). This is an intimate resort with a mere 24 rooms and under French management. The resort is built in Balinese/Thai style with natural materials; think wooden floors and coconut sheet roofs. It has all the facilities you would expect from a 5 star resort.
3rd Place: Sunrise Villa
Thong Nai Pan Noi
3 double bedrooms – 9,400 THB
Sunrise Villa is a hillside villa with three double en-suite bedrooms and magnificent sea views. The house is large – it has 200 sqm of internal living space and a 2 metre wide wrap around balcony. The villa is set in a 1,000 sqm landscaped garden.
The kitchen is fully equipped with a dining table. The lounge has seating for 6 and a TV. This is a good option for families and groups of friends travelling together. Last year Sunrise Villa was fully booked from the 23rd December through to the 15th January so book now if you are interested.
4th Place: Best Western Phanganburi Resort
Beachside Cottage- 5,400 THB
Best Western Phanganburi is one of the better places to stay in Haad Rin, location of the Full Moon Party which happens every year on the 25th December. The party is a 5 minute walk away. The resort is a good mid-range option. The rooms come with satellite TV, air-con, balcony, and coffee/tea maker. There is a large swimming pool and good quality restaurant. The Best Western has been running for several years and caters for those who want to experience the Full Moon Party but who also enjoy a few creature comforts.
5th Place: The Coast
Deluxe Double Room – 5,100 THB (inc Breakfast)
The Coast is Haad Rin’s newest resort. It is very modern and stylish. The design motif is polished concrete and the colour red is used to contrast with the grey. The resort is a short 8-minute walk from the party beach. This is Haad Rin’s best ‘flashpacker’ option. Although the rooms are a bit crammed in the facilities are good with a bar, restaurant, pool and fitness room. If you are planning to go to the party, you are aged 20 to 30, have a few pennies to spare, and like to keep up with the latest fashions, then this is the place for you.
6th Place: Havana Beach Resort
Thong Nai Pan Yai
Standard Double – 2,530 THB (inc Breakfast)
Deluxe – 2,930 THB (inc Breakfast)
Havana is a classic beach resort which represents great value for money. It books out completely every Christmas. The beach is perfect; it has a big pool, nicely appointed rooms with balconies, and a great beach front restaurant. For the price you can’t really go wrong with a stay at Havana Beach Resort. Indian food lovers note that the restaurant serves the best Indian food on the Island. It also serves a good BBQ and Thai food just in case you don’t fancy a Chicken Vindaloo for your Christmas lunch.
7th Place: Morning Star
Ban Tai Beach
Standard Studio – 2,400 THB (inc Breakfast)
Standard Beachfront – 2,920 THB (inc Breakfast)
Superior Studio – 3,250 THB (inc Breakfast)
English princess Eugenie stayed at Morning Star in 2008 with her friends when she went to the Full Moon Party. You could do the same: it’s a mere 10 minutes drive away from Haad Rin. The resort will organise you a taxi. This is a quiet family run resort. The rooms are basic but pleasant (air-con, satellite TV, safe and tea/coffee making facilities) with a fair sized pool and affordable restaurant. Without doubt Morning Star is one of the better Ban Tai Resorts.
8th Place: Salad Beach Resort
Haad Salad in the North West of the Island
Superior Building – 2,050 THB (inc Breakfast)
Superior Seaside – 2,400 THB (inc Breakfast)
Garden View Bungalow – 2,800 THB (inc Breakfast)
Salad Beach Resort is Haad Salad’s most popular place to stay. Lots of families go here. It’s a bit of a trek to the Full Moon Party and there is no real night life to speak of. For some people this will be a bonus, for others not; although, you can walk to nearby Haad Yao if you fancy a night out. The rooms are set either on the beach front or in the well kept tropical gardens complete with faux waterfall. The resort has a big pool and a nice beachfront restaurant. This is a solid mid-range option. Very few people complain and it gets a good level of repeat custom.
9th Place: Haad Khuat Resort
Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat)
Hotel Sea View Fan – 1,300 THB
Hotel Sea View Air-Con (Twin) – 1,800 THB (inc Breakfast)
Hotel Sea View Air-Con (King) – 2,000 THB (inc Breakfast)
Bottle Beach is a really good ‘get-away’ location for couples with no interest in night life or disturbance of any kind. Haad Khuat Resort is the best of the four accommodation options on this beach. With 15 rooms and 13 bungalows it has an intimate feel to it. It is very laid back. This is the perfect place to decompress after a hectic year.
10th Place: Baan Panburi
Thong Nai Pan Yai
Garden Hut Fan – 650 THB
Thai House A/C – 1,500 THB
Long time visitors to Koh Phangan will remember the old Baan Panburi, which used to be located in Thong Nai Pan Noi. They moved some of the bungalows over to a new location in Thong Nai Pan Yai to make way for Buri Rasa. Many of the same staff went as well and it retains much of the same feel as the original resort. For those who don’t remember the original resort expect basic accommodation and super friendly staff.
This is a classic beach bungalow resort and we will be very sorry to see it go next year. Baan Panburi is one of the original Thong Nai Pan resorts dating back to the 1990s and with it goes memories of good times past. Enough of the nostalgia, we should also mention the beach front restaurant.
